There is a dire need of blood/platelets for Cancer Patients/other life threatening diseases and many a times, non-availability of timely help can lead to death of patients. Blood/Platelets for Cancer Patients: The astounding success in curing Childhood Cancers is due to the advances in treatments like chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. But these successes also come with the price of increased side effects. The most common side effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is the suppression of production of blood components in our body. The three main blood components are red blood cells (RBC) (important for maintaining the hemoglobin and hence the oxygenation in the body), the white blood cells (WBC) (important for maintaining the immunity in the body) and the platelets. Platelets are probably the least known of the three, but perhaps serve the most important purpose of stopping any bleed that happens in the body. So if anywhere (externally or internally) there is any breach of the surface and bleeding occurs, platelets are the warriors who go and stop the bleeding. If there are not adequate platelets in the body, any bleed will go on till the person dies. When cancers are treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, this is what happens precisely, the platelet counts go down, along with RBC and WBC. But unlike RBC and WBC, there is no replacement or replenishment available for platelets – natural or synthetic – except for platelets collected from other human beings. And this forms the basis for a Platelet Donation Drive. Blood /platelets for other diseases: Similarly patients suffering with other life threatening diseases also require blood/platelet support. Team ’anjezë’ is committed to Federation of Bombay Blood Banks (FBBB) to increase the donors for blood/platelets supporting patients with critical needs.

Requirement is a list of committed blood/ platelet donors who share the same thought of making a difference to the society by donating and saving lives. As such Team ‘anjezë’ needs committed donors for this cause

This donation happens at various places and requires complete understanding of the process. Through this cause Team ‘anjezë’ has registered more than 600 donors (and counting) at Tata Memorial Hospital exclusively for platelets and 1700 donors (and counting), through SRLC, for the Federation of Bombay Blood Banks. (Based on the service rendered by Team anjezë, the above data is updated on quarterly basis).

Team ‘anjezë’ has started playing an active role in increasing the donor database at Tata Memorial Hospital by conducting several camps with corporates across Mumbai. This has led to a decrease on the dependency of replacement donors and puts less stress on the families of patients taking treatment at the hospital. Similarly Team ‘anjezë’ has increased the donor database for the Federation of Bombay Blood Banks.
